Hot and gusty for the southeast

Warm northerly winds have brought a hot September day and night across southeastern parts of Australia.

Adelaide only managed to cool to 21.6 overnight, the warmest September night since 1987 and the second warmest in 37 year of records. Meningie, in the Upper South East, had a minimum of 18 overnight its hottest September night in almost half a century. Elsewhere, Edithburgh, 21.3, Kuitpo, 19.1, and Noarlunga, 21.6, all recorded the hottest September night in 30 years, 16 years and 14 years respectively.

Shifting south Hobart recorded its hottest September day in 27 years as the mercury climbed to 28. Eslewhere in Tasmania, Hobart Airport and Bushy Park both reached 27 there hottest September day since 1987.

These toasty September maxima and minima are a result of a hot airmass being dragged over the southeast in hot northerly winds ahead of a strong cold front. These northerly winds will shift to the west this afternoon allowing the airmass to cool and minimum temperatures to return closer to average for the end of the month.

Another cold front will approach South Australia on Monday meaning a gusty westerly flow will continue until mid week. On Wednesday, a high pressure system will begin to build bringing stable conditions over southeastern parts of the country for the remainder of the working week.
