Hot horizons for Canberra

Kim Westcott, Saturday December 7, 2019 - 12:42 AEDT

Canberra will see progressively warmer days this week, peaking in the high 30's.

The mercury will hit the low 30’s this weekend, and reach the mid 30's by the start of the working week. The hottest day will be Tuesday, which is currently forecast to reach the high 30's.

The hottest December day recorded at Canberra airport was in 1994, which saw the mercury hit 39.2 degrees, and there is a chance that Tuesday could see a new record.

Even as the hottest part of the air mass moves north, temperatures will still reach the low-to-mid 30's on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.

Typically, Canberra will see ten days exceeding 30 degrees each December. It is possible that Canberra will experience six of these kind of days in a row. Although as uncomfortable as it is, it's not uncommon. In 2017 there were eight consecutive 30-degree days in December, and in 2018 there was a week’s worth of 30-degree days from Christmas to New Years Eve.

It looks like Canberrans will have to wait until Friday for slightly cooler conditions.
