Inland NSW and QLD sweat through an early autumn heatwave

Anthony Duke, Tuesday March 3, 2015 - 14:40 AEDT

Parts of southwest QLD and northwest NSW have seen and will see some very hot temperatures considering the summer season is over.

Bedourie in the QLD Channel Country reached 44.3 degrees on Monday. With the temperature set to reach above 40 degrees each day until Thursday, its likely to have seen its hottest March spell in at least 17 years.

Towns across the Upper Western of NSW are also likely to see their hottest March run of days in over a decade. By Wednesday afternoon, Brewarrina's five day average maxima will be 40 degrees and its hottest March spell in 15 years.

Even the clear skies overnight won't bring much relief from the heat as temperatures threaten to remain five to eight degrees above the March average. Infact parts of western QLD is not likely to cool below 30 degrees until Friday morning.

The heat has been building for some days now over central Australia, meanwhile cold fronts crossing the southeast have pushed the heat north. On Wednesday evening and overnight, winds will turn southerly bringing cooler air to southwestern QLD. This should bring a few days relief, especially overnight. However, the heat should make a brief return at the start of next week.
