Interior set to turn up the winter warmth this weekend

Ben McBurney, Wednesday July 29, 2015 - 15:35 AEST

Chilly weather will quickly turn to very warm and windy conditions this weekend over many parts of Australia's interior this weekend.

A slow-moving low pressure trough over Western Australia will move east across the nation. This trough will drag very warm air sourced from the north and pool it over the interior.

From tomorrow, daytime temperatures will be averaging around 25 degrees, more than five degrees above the July average.

However, by the weekend much of the interior will be experiencing its warmest spell of weather since May. Alice Springs may reach 30 degrees over the weekend, while Thargomindah will climb into the high 20s on Sunday.

As a strong cold front pushes up from the south from Saturday, the considerable temperature gradient will mean winds will whip up, causing fire danger to soar. There is potential for fire danger to reach severe or extreme levels, particularly over western Queensland where winds will be strongest.

The warmth will be short lived, as the front sweeps through late on Sunday and into Monday. Behind the front, daytime temperatures will be as much as 15 degrees cooler, with night times possibly dipping below freezing again.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
