It's raining gold in Glasgow and showers in Sydney

Sydneysiders awoke to news of a staggering five Aussie gold medals on the first day of the Commonwealth Games before showers started rolling through.

Many woke up early to watch the end of the swimming and enjoyed watching the medals rain down on the Australians. Yet soon after, as people were commuting to work, the showers also took the trip from the Blue Mountains to the western suburbs and then into the city.

The rare sight of rain, like Gold medals, is likely to stick around in Sydney during the morning before easing up in the middle of the day. During the afternoon and evening the showers should return, such that by early Saturday morning most of Sydney will pick up a few millimetres.

This is one of the few wet periods in Sydney this month, with the city likely to complete its driest July since 1995. Most of the city will gain less than 10mm and between 5-10% of its average July rainfall.

As we look ahead to the weekend and next week we are hoping that the gold will keep raining down on the Aussie team. Sadly Sydney's parks and gardens will miss out on rain as a high pressure ridge will move overhead. It looks like it could be a while before Sydney sees any more glorious water falling from the sky.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
