Jack Frost brings a late chill over NSW

New South Wales residents woke up to a chilly start to the working week.

Overnight, Kiama recorded its coldest October night in four years when the mercury dropped to 8.4 degrees. It was a similar story at Ulladulla, with the overnight temperature of 6.9 degrees. In Canberra, the mercury recorded minus one, its coldest night in three years.

It has been 13 years since it was this cold this late in the year for Narrabri, Kempsey and Taree.

For Glen Innes, Armidale and Terrey Hills residents, it has been a decade since it was this cold this late in the year.

Even Sydney didn't escape the cold morning, with the mercury dropping to 10 degrees, its coldest morning this late in the year in eight years.

The cold morning is due to a large high pressure system sitting over the state, bringing clear night skies and light winds. A cold front passing over Victoria over the weekend helped drop temperatures as the cold air marched north.

Over the next few days, this high will remain over the state. Mornings will begin to get warmer gradually as the clouds increase ahead of a low pressure trough arriving mid-week.

This may not be the last widespread cold morning of the season, with indications that mid next week may also herald another chilly start. The good news is that the cold mornings now look to be few and far between.
