Jack Frost visits QLD

Clear skies and light winds brought a very cold morning for a majority of QLD, leaving a frosty ground in its wake.

For Collinsville it was the coldest April morning recorded since 1963, with the mercury dropping as low as seven degrees, a far cry from the balmy 17 degrees usually seen for this time of year. The mercury dropped to eight degrees at Proserpine, making it the coldest April morning in 21 years. Some of the coldest temperatures were recorded in the Darling Downs, where Stanthorpe recorded one degree. Elsewhere in the district; Dalby, Warwick and Oakey recorded two degrees, which is eight-to-ten degrees below the April average.

These low temperatures were caused by a cool airmass moving throughout the state, this was coupled by light winds and clear skies under a stagnant high pressure ridge. With a low level of moisture in the atmosphere, frost formed in the hollows. For many, it was the first frost of the year.

On Tuesday and Wednesday the mornings will remain cool but they will gradually warm up later in the week. By midweek, a surface trough and showery onshore winds are likely to break the run of dry and sunny days for central and eastern parts of the state. Rain will set in over the southeast during Thursday and Friday, becoming heavy at times, bringing a cool day for those under the rain cloud.
