Jumpers and raincoats needed for Melbourne & Adelaide

Temperatures well below average are forecast for Melbourne and Adelaide over the coming days, with some drizzly rain also adding to the chill factor.

Daytime temperatures are only expected to reach a top of 21 degrees on Monday in Melbourne, as a trough residing over the region keeps skies overcast and some possibly strong southerly winds persist throughout the day. A jumper should also be required for Tuesday as similar conditions are expected.

Severe thunderstorms with locally heavy rain and hail have already been recorded on Sunday afternoon across central and eastern Victoria thanks to this residing trough. At 4:30pm, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was current for the Melbourne area, as well as Northern Country, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland and parts of Central and East Gippsland Forecast Districts. With rain expected to continue to fall throughout Monday, a raincoat is highly recommended.

Reaching only a top of 23 degrees on Sunday in Adelaide, 5 degrees below the January average, it was not a typical summers' day today. On Sunday afternoon showers have already begun to fall about southeastern parts of South Australia with 2mm of rainfall already having fallen in the city. As skies remain clear on Monday, even cooler conditions could occur with daytime temperatures possibly only reaching 22 degrees and so a jumper may be required. There could be some light showers during the morning however these should quickly pass.
