Late-spring heat gripping NSW

New South Wales is baking today as temperatures soar more than 10 degrees above average in some areas.
A tongue of hot air is being dragged across the state by a trough of low pressure, sending the mercury into the mid-thirties from east to west.
By 2pm EDT, Sydney had reached 31 degrees in the city and 36 in some suburbs. This is the hottest day in nine months for Bankstown, Camden and the Airport.
A little way down the coast, Albion Park in Wollongong is having the hottest day since January, already sitting close to 33 degrees before midday.
The heat affecting New South Wales today swept across the country from the west earlier in the week. It has now taken up residence over central and eastern Australia and will remain in place for the next four days, thanks to a blocking high pressure system over the Tasman Sea.
The stagnant pool of heat will be moderated along the coast this weekend by sea breezes and a weak southerly change, although areas west of the ranges will remain hot.
Another state-wide spike in temperatures will occur on Monday and Tuesday as northwesterly winds strengthen ahead of an approaching front.
Most areas will see some respite by Wednesday a cooler southwesterly winds take over behind the front. The southern half of New South Wales will be about 10 degrees cooler by the middle of next week.
