Low lingers off Sydney

It has been a soggy start to October and more is on the way with a low pressure system lingering just off the Sydney Coast.

Overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning the low started drifting towards the Sydney Coast whilst deepening. Showers started over parts of the Illawarra on Sunday morning before spreading north into Sydney and the Central Coast.

As of 9am on Sunday, Kiama and Bellambi had each picked up 7mm of rain with 9mm falling at Gosford. Falls in Sydney were mostly below 2mm.

The low will move closer to the coast later on Sunday whilst deepening a little. Further showers are likely throughout Sunday and into Monday, although not has heavy or as widespread, before the low dissipates. On Sunday, totals of 20-30mm are likely from the Illawarra to the Central Coast with isolated falls of 40-50mm possible. On Monday, falls are expected to generally remain below 10mm, but isolated falls of up to 20mm are possible.

Winds will be brisk at times on Sunday, especially along the coast. Gusts of 60-80km/h can be expected with exposed parts of the Illawarra likely to have the strongest winds.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
