May showers return to north QLD in May

Tristan Meyers, Thursday May 19, 2016 - 15:50 AEST

Some Queenslanders living in places that missed out on last week's big rainfall event have a chance at some good falls over the weekend.

A tropical pulse looks to cause some good showery and stormy activity across QLD's Peninsula and Gulf Country areas, potentially extending to the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and northern parts of the North West.

Although tropical systems are fickle, the consensus indicates that the most generous totals should fall in eastern parts of the Peninsula, bringing widespread 25-50mm. This is an area which, apart from the odd storm, is generally dry this time of year. Further south and east, showers look to become more patchy, with isolated totals of around 10-50mm.

From Saturday 22nd, a trough will approach from the west, and as it moves over western parts of QLD, it will infill with this tropical moisture. From Sunday 23rd, falls will become heavy, finally easing in the Gulf's coastal fringes by Monday afternoon.

This rain is welcome across this area of QLD, particularly after a lackluster wet season. For the remainder of autumn and into winter, conditions will become drier, typical of these times of year.

Generation gone with the wind

13:20 AEST A weeklong stretch of low wind power was broken on Wednesday evening, as a weak cold front marched across southern Australia.  The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
