Melbourne bracing for chill

A powerful cold front is set to bring the coldest weather since winter last year, but when will it arrive in Melbourne?

Gusty northerly winds and patchy light showers are bringing an average start to the day in Melbourne today. Make the most of this relative warmth though, as tomorrow is expected to be three to four degrees colder tomorrow after a cold front arrives later this afternoon.

The cold front that will arrive late this afternoon should bring a noticeable drop in temperature, chilly southwesterly winds and some heavy rain to fall well into the evening.

The temperature will struggle to warm into the double digits tomorrow as cloud, patchy showers and a Southern Ocean chill combine to bring the coldest day since winter last year.

If you are heading to the MCG on Friday night to watch Collingwood host the Dockers be prepared for a cold night at the footy. Beanie, gloves, scarf and jacket are all recommended as the gusty southwesterly winds will feel make it feel a few degrees colder. Bring a raincoat or make sure your jacket is waterproof as showers are a risk into the evening as well.

Below average daytime and nighttime temperatures will then persist over the weekend and into the start of the week, with Sunday morning being particularly cold. A day as 'warm' as today isn't expected until Tuesday.
