Melbourne set to shake off the cold

Kim Westcott, Wednesday July 27, 2016 - 15:00 AEST

After a run of cold, wet and windy few days, Melbourne will end their month on a warmer note.

On Tuesday, the mercury stopped at 11 degrees, but thanks to the howling wind, it felt like closer to six-or-seven degrees at times.

Thankfully, for the week ahead, Melbourne will start to see warmer conditions.

Daytime temperatures should reach the mid-teens on Thursday, warming further by the weekend to reach a top of about 17 degrees on Sunday.

Coinciding with warmer days, warmer mornings are also likely for the final few days of this month. With winds more settled than they have been over the past few days, wind chill will be much less noticeable.

Although it will be warmer, an umbrella will come in handy. Showers are possible every day over the next week, with falls generally only a few millimetres each day.

As far as the mid-winter month of July goes, Melbourne has been let off rather lightly. Mornings have been warmer than usual, averaging around two degrees above the norm. Daytime temperatures have also trended on the warmer side, just over one degree above the July average.

For those who are not too fond of the wet, Melbourne has seen an above-average number of rain days (17 days and counting). The city has recorded 60mm in the rain gauge this month, which is already 10mm over the average, and it is likely that this number will rise by the end of the month.
