Melbourne shakes off the cold

Kim Westcott, Sunday July 5, 2015 - 13:52 AEST

After a gloomy and cold winter's day in Melbourne, sunshine is making a brief appearance.

Thick cloud covered Melbourne and surrounds, allowing the mercury to hover between nine and ten degrees for most of Saturday. Despite the official maximum being recorded late on Saturday evening (10.6 degrees), it was still the coldest day this early in winter in three years. The past three days have been 12 degrees or below, making it the coldest three day run in eight years.

Thankfully temperatures have slowly risen despite some high cloud lingering overhead today. It is already five-to-six degrees warmer than it was on Saturday afternoon.

For the start of the working week, cloud and showers will keep the day cooler, with the mercury hovering in the low teens. Showers won't be more than a few millimetres, but may arrive at the same time as gusty winds, making umbrella usage treacherous. Most of the showers will have cleared by Monday evening.

A run of cold mornings are likely to make a return mid-week as a the skies become clear, with Friday looking like the coldest morning. Later on Friday, the umbrella will be required again as the showers return. These showers will become more established over the weekend.
