Melbourne temperature see-saw

Ben Domensino, Friday March 10, 2017 - 14:59 AEDT

Melbourne's warm week has come to an end.

The city enjoyed its warmest four day spell for March in three years this week as temperatures reached 27-32 degrees from Monday to Thursday. The average maximum daily maximum temperatures at this time of year is 24 degrees for Melbourne.

Despite this summery start to the week, today is feeling much more autumnal.

At 2pm today it was 22 degrees in the city, well below the 31 degrees at the same time yesterday. This contrast has given Melburnians a more familiar wardrobe workout after spending most of the week in shirts and skirts.

Temperatures will continue to see-saw this weekend, reaching the high twenties on Saturday and back down to a more typical mid-twenties on Sunday. Showers are a chance from Saturday afternoon and the city could even see a storms on Sunday.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
