Melbourne's brief summer spell

Kim Westcott, Sunday November 22, 2015 - 17:29 AEDT

Melbourne has been left wondering what happened to the sunshine after last week's run of summer-like days.

Earlier last week, the temperature hit the high-twenties for three consecutive days. The warmest of those days (Tuesday 17th) saw the mercury reach 33 degrees, which is 11 degrees above the November average.

However for the past three days thick cloud, brisk onshore winds and showers have seen the temperature remain in the low-teens. The mercury will struggle to reach 20 degrees again for the start of the working week, with a few showers thrown in for good measure.

By Tuesday, the skies will begin to clear and the city will begin to warm up, with a forecast max of 25 degrees.

On Wednesday, gusty northwesterly winds ahead of a low pressure trough will see the city hit at least 30 degrees, potentially as high as 35 degrees, as a hot and dry airmass moves in.

Unfortunately the warmer weather won't linger, with a cool change set to arrive later in Wednesday or Thursday morning. This southwesterly change will cause daytime temperatures to take a nose-dive, returning to the high-teens and low-twenties for the remainder of the week and into the weekend.
