Melbourne's grey Easter weather

Easter celebrations in Melbourne will be slightly dimmed under cloudy skies, bringing the coldest day since last year.

A cold front is crossing Victoria on Good Friday, spelling an end to the 'good' weather. The sunshine that has lit up the last few days will be hidden behind cloud for almost the whole Easter weekend. The cloudy weekend will be in sharp contrast with the dry and sunny conditions experienced in almost the whole of Australia.

Today, showers will spread across Melbourne, focussing on the city during the middle of the day and dampening some family bbq's.

On Saturday cloud and a cool air mass will combine to limit temperatures to only 17 degrees. This will make it the coolest day since the first few days of December.

On Easter Sunday the sun will again be obscured, but thankfully the rain will stay away for Church picnics and family Easter egg hunts.

On Easter Monday the sun will finally return and temperatures will crack 20 degrees. However showers are due to arrive in the evening with the next cold front passing through.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
