Melbourne's sweltering weekend

After a hot and dry January, summer still isn't releasing it's grip on Melbourne.
Across all Melbourne sites, it was the hottest January since at least 1990, with several places such as Melbourne Airport, Wallan, Coldstream and Viewbank recording their highest temperature on record on January 25th.
On top of the heat, there wasn't much rain to speak of during January, with most of the rain falling at the end of the month. At Melbourne's Olympic Park, only 11.2mm landed in the gauge, which is less than a quarter of the January average.
This weekend, the forecast is for another stinker, with temperatures in the mid-to-high 30's on both days. It's a far cry from Melbourne's longterm February average of 26 degrees. A squally cool change will arrive on Sunday, providing relief in the late afternoon or early evening, maybe bringing a shower or two as well.
Into next week, temperatures will fluctuate. Initially, cool southerly winds will see Monday's temperatures around 15-17 colder. While the mercury will creep upwards during the week it is unlikely to reach the heights of this weekend. It may also be time to locate the umbrella, with showers and storms on the cards from Wednesday to Friday.
