More fronts ahead to soak the southwest

Multiple fronts will sweep the southwest of Western Australia over the next few days, delivering significant rainfall and bringing damaging winds.

A trough along the west coast will continue to trigger a few showers through Saturday. Bunbury picked up over 17mm in the 24 hours up to 9am on Saturday, making the total rain for this June (129mm) close to the long-term June average (136mm). Although the first month of winter is coming to an end, there is plenty of rain on its way.

A vigorous front will cross the south of WA between Sunday night and Monday morning, following a weaker front crossing the region on Sunday morning. The strong front will interact with a band of tropical moisture approaching from the Indian Ocean, which will result in a good combination of generous rain and even some storm activity.

The heaviest falls are expected around the west coast, including Perth, with some totals possibly exceeding 50mm by the end of Monday, whereas lighter falls are set east of the South West Land Division. Scattered thunderstorms are also possible, with the highest chance on Sunday night, possibly producing some heavy downpours and damaging wind gusts.

The system will also bring strong winds, with westerlies becoming strongest from Sunday evening and Monday morning along the west coast, extending to the southern coast until Monday night. The coastal fringe might see sustained winds exceeding 60km/h and some exposed coastal areas could register wind gusts near 100km/h.

A high pressure system will take over around mid next week, bringing settled conditions to the region with chilly mornings.

Generation gone with the wind

The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
