More major flooding in QLD after another tropical soaking

The streets of Ingham were underwater on Friday morning as the Herbert River rose 10 metres in 24 hours, to more than two metres above the major flood level.

The Herbert was one of four Queensland rivers under a major flood warning this morning, with a spate of moderate and minor flood warnings also in effect across the sodden state.

Ingham's inundation comes after the town received 508mm of rain during the first nine days of March, which is 111mm above the long-term average for the entire month.

Further upstream, some rain gauges along the Herbert River registered more than 350mm of rain in the last 48 hours alone.

A rain gauge at Kirrama Range, which is located between Ingham and Tully, reported 409mm of rain during the 24 hours to 9am today and a massive 810mm in the last four days.

Further north, Cairns just experienced its heaviest rain in three years, with 175mm falling at the racecourse rain gauge during the last 24 hours.

Heavy rain will continue to spread north along Queensland's North Tropical Coast and Tablelands today, before contracting further north into the Peninsula District and easing overnight.

Much lighter and more isolated showers will affect the state's northeastern districts over the weekend, although flooding is likely to continue as peaks make their way downstream.
