Multi-day rainfall winding down for Tasmania

A low pressure system continued to move into the Tasman on Friday, releasing more rainfall over the southeast and topping up the already large accumulated rainfall totals since near the start of the week


The Lake Margaret (61mm) and Razorback (54mm) sites had their gauges filled the most in the 24 hours since Friday morning. Elsewhere Mount Read had 40mm, Scotts Peak Dam had 38mm and Grove had 28mm.


If the range is extended back to 9am last Tuesday, some even more impressive totals are revealed. Pyengana had 95mm rain since Tuesday, St Helens Airport also just breaching the 90mm mark. Eddystone Point (89mm), Pioneer (82mm) and Friendly Beaches (72mm) also experienced an abundance of rainfall during that same period of time. There were also a number of locations receiving between 50mm and 70mm since 9am last Tuesday.


This has seen flooding continue for many rivers, with flood warnings issued for the Macquarie, Jordan, Meander, North and South Esk and Coal Rivers.


Most of the rainfall has cleared up this morning, with only a handful of places getting barely a millimetre of rainfall, Tasman Island’s 2mm being the standout. This trend should persist for the weekend, with high pressure building and clearing much of the cloud that is currently over Tasmania, leading to a mostly sunny weekend for much of the state.

Generation gone with the wind

13:20 AEST A weeklong stretch of low wind power was broken on Wednesday evening, as a weak cold front marched across southern Australia.  The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
