Nathan soaks NT's Arnhem Land

Ben McBurney, Tuesday March 24, 2015 - 12:10 AEDT

The slow-moving TC Nathan has brought intense rainfall to Arnhem Land, but is now weakening over land on its way to Darwin.

Since Saturday night Nathan has been impacting the Northern Territory's Top End, making landfall in the east near Nhulunbuy on Sunday morning and then moving off the Arafura coast.

Across the last 48 hours Nhulunbuy has been one of the hardest hit locations, picking up 295mm. It also experienced wind gusts of 95km/h as the category two system passed nearby.

As the system moved into the Arafura Sea it continued to bring heavy rain to Arnhem Land, with Milingimbi producing 140mm in the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday and gusts over 100km/h.

This morning Nathan made landfall again between Maningrida and Goulburn Island, gaining 109mm at Maningrida.

Later today Nathan is likely to become a tropical low again as it tracks west across the northern Top End towards Darwin. In Darwin rainfall is likely to increase tomorrow, but is not likely to be anything extraordinary.

Nathan should move off the western Top End coastline on Thursday, when it will start to produce rain and storms in the northern Kimberley. There is still the chance that Nathan will become a tropical cyclone again in Western Australia's waters, but we will have to wait and see.
