Near-record wet season heat in Darwin

Ben Domensino, Wednesday October 12, 2016 - 16:10 AEDT

Darwin is experiencing one of the hottest starts to a wet season on record.

The temperature in Darwin has exceeded 33 degrees during the first 12 days of October, for the first time in seven years. The highest temperature so far this month was 37.5 degrees on Saturday 8th, also the highest October temperature recorded since 2009.

The current record for days consecutive days over 33 degrees at the beginning of the wet season is 22, set back in 1942.

This year, the run of 33 degree days is forecast to extend to at least 18 days. This would make it the hottest start in 18 years and put Darwin within four days of the existing record.

In terms of rainfall, Darwin has already received 70 percent of its October average and just came out of its wettest September since 1984.
