Darwin was the only capital to pick up any rain on New Year's Day but a minimal 0.4mm.

Hobart was the windiest capital for the day, with a gust of 52km/h at 12:45pm.

Heat is likely to build again in the coming days. Adelaide is expected to reach 42 degrees on Friday, 35 for Melbourne on Friday, 41 for Canberra on Saturday, 28 on Saturday for Hobart, 34 for Sydney on Saturday, 36 for Perth on Sunday while northern cities remain near average.

A cooler change will move through after this heat period dropping temperatures up to 17 degrees below their peak temperatures the following day. Rain is likely to accompany the cooler change and should bring rain areas across the south and east of the country.
