Northern QLD set for a drenching

There were some healthy totals overnight, but northern parts of Queensland are in for some more heavy rain.

Persistent showers moved over the Tropical coast throughout Friday and by 9am Saturday, Innisfail recorded 105mm, which is one third of May's average rainfall. Nearby, rain gauges also picked up heavy falls, with Garradunga seeing 155mm in the 24 hours to 9am.

Other notable 24 hour totals included Daradgee 119mm, Sweeney Creek 116 and Salt Water Creek saw 102mm. Further north in the Daintree, falls between 25-50mm were recorded.

However that is not the last of the rain. A trough will drag tropical moisture over the Cape York Peninsula, eastern parts of the Gulf Country and North Tropical Coasts and Tablelands. A large portion of these districts will see weekly totals add up to over 100mm. Some isolated pockets will pick up over 400mm, with a majority of the rain falling over the weekend and into the start of next week.

There is a Flood Watch for several rivers and catchments throughout the Gulf, Cape York and the Far North Tropical Coast between Ingham and Cooktown.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
