Northern Rivers has copped a drenching

An offshore low pressure system, supported by a persistent pool of
upper cold air has lead to some healthy rainfall totals over the
last few days across northeastern parts of New South Wales.

A number of rain gauges in the Wilsons and Richmond river
catchments have recorded in excess off 300mm since 9am on Friday,
hence the minor flood warning in place. In proximity to the
Wilsons river, Terania Creek and Tuckurimba picked up 336mm and
322mm respectively, while Tuckombil and Houghlahan Creek located
in the Lower Richmond River collected collected 362mm and 348mm
respectively.

We are not even half way through the month yet and the total
rainfall recorded so far has more than tripled the June average in
Casino, with 220 mm over the past four days compared to the
average of 72mm. Lismore Airport and Ballina have also comfortably
exceeded their total average June rainfall over the same time
frame, with 261mm and 256mm collected.

A severe weather warning remains in place for Northern Rivers and
Mid North Coast for heavy rain and thunderstorms, which could lead
to flash flooding. The system responsible will drift northwards
through the course of today. This is allowing conditions to ease
over the Mid North Coast, but further heavy rain is likely for the
Northern Rivers, with an additional 100mm or more possible by the
end of Thursday.

The system is also causing gales to develop along the Byron Coast,
with southeasterly wind gusts exceeding 80km/h recorded at Cape
Byron this morning. Gales are a risk here for at least the next 24
hours.
