NSW ranges set to turn into a winter wonderland this weekend

Kim Westcott, Wednesday June 22, 2016 - 15:12 AEST

With a mix of snow and sun and some wind in between; this weekend is shaping up to be fun for the kids and not-so-little kids.

A powerful cold front will move over NSW on Friday, with everyone thinking about snow. This front has all the right ingredients to make fine flurries, with a substantial pool of very cold air which originated in Antarctica as well as enough moisture to turn the rain into snow.

The ski resorts have reported 15cm of fresh snow in the past 24 hours, and it is a good start. However the next few days will really help make a decent base, with around 20-40 cm expected at resort-level during Friday. It won't be only the resorts that see the snow, with parts of the southern and central ranges also likely to become snow-capped, potentially extending as far as north as the Guyra area.

As exciting as snow is, there are several things to consider if you want to go out and experience it for yourself. This front will bring with it very strong winds, and combined with the snow showers, visibility will be poor which will make driving conditions extremely difficult. These winds may also bring down branches and force road closures, so check the conditions before you go out. Winds will remain very gusty until Saturday mid-morning.

In behind this large cold front, a high will sit over on the state this weekend. As the skies clear and winds become light, very cold overnight temperatures are likely. If you are planning a camping trip this weekend, be aware that for some locations will drop well below freezing. Days look to be on the cooler side, but mainly sunny.

A weaker front will arrive during Monday, potentially bringing another round of wind, rain and snow and sleet. Gusty conditions will be confined to the coast during Tuesday as the front moves offshore, with the winds easing throughout Wednesday. West of the ranges will be settled and sunny until around Friday.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
