Parts of Victoria sodden by big rain

In the last 24 hours central and eastern parts of Victoria have received a good amount of rain, although there is more in store today.

The steady rain at Avalon allowed the airport to pick up 29mm in the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday, its wettest July day in 35 years. In the Gippsland region, Bairnsdale collected 52mm in the 24 hours to 9am, more than the monthly average of 47mm. There hasn't been a wetter July day at Bairnsdale in 25 years. Essendon received 25mm, making it the wettest July day since 2003. Melbourne picked up 23mm, its wettest day so far this year.

As the low pressure system that brought the winds and rain tracked east this morning, the heaviest rain has begun to move with it. Today, the focus of the falls will be in Gippsland, with widespread rain likely to bring at least 30mm for most locations although larger falls greater than 100mm are also a risk.

Those in Central parts of the state will still need their umbrella today, although showers will be lighter and patchier.

There is a current Severe Weather Warning for the North East and Gippsland for damaging wind gusts as well as heavy rain, which may be lead to flash flooding. Several rivers and lakes also under a flood watch.

Rain will clear further on Thursday, although it won't be completely dry in the east until Saturday. Unfortunately the next round of wind and rain is not far behind: by Sunday evening showers will start up again as a deep cold front moves in early next week.
