Perth ending winter on a wet note

Perth could see the heaviest rain in more than a month tonight as a late-winter front hits the southwest.

Rain has already started falling over the state's southwest capes and will continue to spread north towards Perth in the next few hours.

The system will bring about 10-20mm across the western half of the South West Land Division, including Perth, with localised heavier falls.

The front and associated rain band will be followed by a low pressure system on Saturday morning, which will cause further blustery showers and a few storms, possibly accompanied by small hail. Cooler southerly winds will remain fresh through the day before easing on Sunday. The temperature will only reach the mid-teens over the weekend.

Tonight's rain comes at the end of a drier-than-usual winter for Perth and won't be enough to make up the season's deficit. The city usually receives about half of its annual rainfall between June and August as cold fronts become more frequent and draw moisture from the Indian Ocean. Unfortunately this year, all three winter months have failed to reach the long term average.

Dry weather will continue at the start of next week, before another front brings a final burst of winter rain on Wednesday.
