Pilbara soaking set to ease

Day time temperatures have been unseasonally chilly with persistent rain over the Pilbara.

Karratha and Roebourne have seen their wettest day in over a year with 29mm and 47mm respectively. Its been one of those weeks as Karratha, Roebourne and Port Hedland have seen six consecutive rain days. Usually at this time of year we see two or three rain days for the entire month of May.

Daytime temperatures have also been chilly as rain and cloud prevent the mercury from warming up. Nearly all weather stations across the Pilbara have recorded below average maximum temperatures since Wednesday last week when the wet spell began. Roebourne recorded its coldest May day in 11 years on Wednesday just reaching 20 degrees. On Monday, Newman just reached 14.7 degrees, the coldest May Day since 1997.

A slow moving trough drawing moisture from the Indian Ocean was to blame for the wet week in the Pilbara.

Rain will finally begin to ease as the trough tracks to the south and east over the coming days. Heavy showers are still a chance on Thursday although by the weekend dry conditions will return as a ridge of high pressure builds across the state.

The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
