Potential for windiest day in years in NSW

Today will be the windiest day of the year for much of the coast and ranges of New South Wales with potential to be the windiest day in more than two years in parts, including Sydney.

The wind will be strong enough (in excess of 90 km/h) for trees and large branches to come down, possibly powerlines. Property, including roofs and fences is also at risk of being damaged. Trees are particularly vulnerable to succumb given how dry it has been recently.

An intense low pressure system to generate these winds has already produced the strong winds of the year in parts of Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and the ACT in the past few days.

The low is now east of Tasmania and is sending a cold front across NSW, including a surge of damaging winds to the coast and ranges of southern and central parts of the state.

For Sydney, the windiest part of the day will be the middle of the day when westerly wind gusts have their chance to peak at 90-95km/h in parts. The last time the city recorded wind as strong as 90km/h was in March 2015.

Wind will ease overnight and into Saturday but will still be fairly strong as they turn more southerly, possibly bringing the odd shower to the coast.
