Pre-monsoon deluge in Darwin

Ben Domensino, Wednesday November 23, 2016 - 10:43 AEDT

Darwin has received its heaviest rain so far this year after a wet and stormy night in the Top End.

A few storms developed over the Top End on Tuesday afternoon, although more persistent rain and thunder set in overnight as most residents were trying to sleep.

Darwin received 82mm in total, which is the heaviest rain since Christmas eve. It's also more than half a month's worth of rain for the city at this time of year.

Further north, Gunn Point picked up a whopping 70mm in one hour and close to 100mm since midnight. This was more rain in 60 minutes than Sydney, Perth or Brisbane have seen during the last two months.

Rainfall over the Top End at this time of year comes from sporadic showers and storms, which result from increasing temperatures and humidity. These conditions will soon give way to more persistent rain later with the arrival of the north Australian monsoon later in the wet season.
