QLD cools off quickly

Kim Westcott, Wednesday April 22, 2015 - 15:58 AEST

A cool day and a cold night has left many Queenslanders wondering if its time to pull out the jumpers.

Throughout the Darling Downs yesterday, some places recorded their coldest April day in many years. Stanthorpe recorded 11 degrees as a maximum, making it the coldest April day in half a century. At Applethorpe, it was the coldest April day since records began in 1967. Warwick can usually expect a top of 25 degrees for this time of year, although the mercury only made it to 15 degrees, making it the coldest day in 19 years.

Southern and eastern parts of the state had a very cold morning, which came as a shock to the system. Mackay saw 11 degrees this morning, making it the coldest April morning recorded since 1952. For Coolangatta, Collinsville, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Richmond and Emerald it was 16 years since it has been this cold in April. It has been seven years since Redcliffe, Logan City, Gympie and Gayndah has been this cold during the morning at this time of year.

These cold temperatures are due to a cold airmass moving up from the southern states, although this cold is more typical of late autumn and winter. In the coming days both the overnight and daytime temperatures will slowly warm back into t-shirt weather that Queenslanders are used too.

However, residents are advised not to put away the jumpers just yet, with another burst of cold likely to hit the state early next week.
