Queensland dust blows over Gulf of Carpentaria

Strong winds ejected a large plume of Queensland dust across Gulf of Carpentaria on Monday.

A firm high pressure system over southwestern Australia sent a surge of blustery south to southeasterly winds across northwest Queensland on Monday morning. Dry topsoil become airborne over the state’s Gulf Country as wind gusts reached 60-65km/h at Burketown, Normanton, Cloncurry, Camooweal and Mount Isa.

Satellite images captured the plume of airborne dirt travelling over the Gulf on Monday, extending more than 500km offshore before the day ended.

Raised dust also affected parts of southeast Queensland on Monday, including Brisbane, as dry and gusty winds swept across the state.
