Rain on the horizon for South Australia

Widespread rain and thunderstorms could affect South Australia this weekend.

Moisture associated with the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Ann is expected to be drawn across southern Australia by a passing cold front later this week.

The interaction of these two systems is likely to produce a broad band of rain and storms that will spread over South Australia, from west to east, on Saturday and Sunday.

While there is still room for forecasts to change, some computer models indicate that widespread totals of 5-15mm will occur over the state's pastoral and agricultural areas. Some places could see more than 30mm from this system, particularly with thunderstorm activity.

This rain would be welcome in South Australia after a dry start to the year. The state as a whole has registered below-average rainfall during seven out of the last eight months.

Prior to May, some parts of the state were experiencing their driest start to a year on record. This included Adeladie, which only registered 17.8mm during the first four months of 2019.

Weather warnings may be issued for this system closer to the weekend, so keep an eye on the latest warnings and forecasts during the coming days.

Generation gone with the wind

The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
