Rainy start to May for southeast QLD

Although April was quite dry for large parts of Queensland, the recent rain at the start of May brought welcome relief.

On Monday evening, a deepening surface trough over the QLD interior caused thunderstorms and heavy rainfall for southeastern parts of the state.

These storms occurred during the course of Monday evening and early morning Tuesday, and produced significant falls in a very short space of time, for some places more than was received for the entire month of April.

Locations to the east and north-east of Kingaroy received well above 10mm from a single storm, with rainfall of 24mm recorded at the Ficks Crossing rainfall station. Isolated rainfall stations reported totals as high as 66mm.

Although Kingaroy itself received only 4.6mm early Tuesday, this was still higher than the April rainfall total of 4.2mm.

Looking at rainfall for the next couple of days, it looks likely that large parts of southern and western QLD should receive at least a couple of drops during the course of the weekend, but probably not anything as significant and dramatic as experienced at the start of the month.
