Record baking the red centre

Central Australia has been sweltering in intense heat over the last two months, with no relief on the horizon.

Like many areas of Australia, the region was baked in record heat during October, with average temperatures during the month being up to five degrees above average; typical of those found during mid-summer.

There has been no letup in November either, with temperatures continuing to stay well above the average.

Records in some centres will tumble again for November, with temperatures averaging in the high 30s for the remainder of the month.

Uluru is likely to smash its previous average maximum record of 38.1 degrees set in 2006, averaging around 38.5 degrees by the end of the month. This record November heat also encompasses their night-time temperatures, which have been averaging a little over 21 degrees.

Alice Springs should see its third hottest November on record (daytime average), averaging around 36.8 degrees during the end of the month.

El Nino conditions encourage very hot conditions over the interior due to less cloud cover, allowing heat to build over extended periods of time.

As a result, significant hotter than average conditions are likely to continue until the northern wet season begins and causes the belt of heat to break down.
