Red Centre basks in balmy mid-winter days

Ben McBurney, Monday July 28, 2014 - 12:53 AEST

Amidst the peak season tourist rush, the Red Centre is experiencing an unusual run of mid-winter warmth as daytime temperatures climb into the mid 20s.

A broad high pressure area is allowing heat to build after causing an extended period of clear skies over the past fortnight. This is creating perfect conditions to get out and about and see all that Australia's interior has to offer.

After reaching 25 degrees yesterday, five degrees above the July average, Alice Springs is forecast to reach at least 25 degrees for the next four days.

Uluru (Ayers Rock) is expected to reach 26 degrees for the next four days, after also recording a maximum of 26 degrees yesterday.

For both places, this will be the warmest run of days in July since 2007, and only the fourth time this has occurred in the past two decades.

The spell of winter warmth will come to an end on the first day of August, as a cool change sweeps through the region.

By Saturday, it will struggle to reach 17 degrees during the peak of the day, leaving many people reaching for their jumpers.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
