Red Centre not so red hot

Angus McLean-Smith, Sunday June 3, 2018 - 14:31 AEST

Winter has well and truly arrived for Alice Springs after a run of freezing mornings in the Red Centre.

Uluru and searing heat are what generally come to mind when Australia's Red Centre is mentioned, however winter mornings tend to be anything but hot. The first three days of this winter have brought this point hammering home, with morning temperatures not getting above freezing. Friday got down to -1.4 degrees, a massive 6.4 degrees below the June average.

However if you endure the freezing mornings, winter in Alice Springs will usually lead to a rather pleasant day, averaging around 20 degrees. Not to mention the fact that the arid climate of the Red Centre leads to mostly sunny and dry days. Despite the below average mornings to start this month, days have kicked winter off slightly warmer than usual.

These freezing morning don't look like letting up until midway through next week, as a trough draws warmer air across from northwestern Western Australia.
