Roll cloud appears over Port Hedland

Ben Domensino, Thursday February 2, 2017 - 16:50 AEDT

Port Hedland residents were treated to a rare roll cloud yesterday afternoon as thunderstorms rumbled over Western Australia's Pilbara district.

The roll cloud passed over Port Hedland in the late afternoon as a thunderstorm moved towards the town from the east. The phenomenon formed at the leading edge of cold air that was rushing out ahead of the approaching storm.

Today, a broad area of low pressure, tropical moisture and high surface temperatures are combining to produce further storms across a large area of central and western Australia.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for the Gascoyne, Pilbara and adjacent areas of Western Australia shortly after midday, where storms could cause damaging winds and heavy rain in the coming hours.

A separate storm warning was issued earlier today for damaging winds in the Northern Territory, for an area to the west of Alice Springs.

Recent rainfall in these parts of Australia have left the ground waterlogged, so storms may temporarily cut off road access.

Winter is Coming: Chilly day for Sydney, rain pelts eastern seaboard

17:22 AEST Just as we forecast yesterday, a coastal trough has deepened along the NSW and southeast Qld coasts as a low in the Coral Sea continues to inch closer to Qld.  The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
