SE Australia heat brief on coast but long-lasting inland

Brett Dutschke, Sunday November 20, 2016 - 15:37 AEDT

Hot weather affecting of Southeastern Australia will only briefly reach coasts but last several days and nights over western New South Wales.

Daytime temperatures reaching the mid-to-high thirties over the mainland and low thirties in Tasmania will only last part of one day on the coasts but will occur on as many as six afternoons in parts of Northwestern NSW.

These sort of temperatures are 15-to-20 degrees above average on the Victorian coast, 10-to-15 degrees above average on parts of the SA and NSW coasts and five-to-10 degrees above average in parts of Tasmania.

For inland areas the heat is closer to average heat for this time of year but when you factor in the duration, it will be harder to cope with, particularly among the elderly and young.

It is bordering on heat wave thresholds in western NSW, with the temperature staying at least five degrees above average for three consecutive days and nights.

The area surrounding Cobar is experiencing three days and night with the temperature staying at least five degrees above average.

A cooler change will cool the coasts in a hurry, as much as 15-to-20 degrees in as little as a few hours in the Melbourne area late Monday.

The change will be more gradual elsewhere, getting to Adelaide in the middle of Monday and Canberra and Sydney on Tuesday night.

For the Bourke and Tibooburra areas of northwest NSW the change will arrive early Wednesday morning, making Wednesday the coolest day in a week, only reaching the low-to-mid thirties.
