Second Week of School Holiday Forecast

Guy Dixon, Saturday July 9, 2016 - 14:21 AEST

After a dynamic week of weather across New South Wales the later stages of the school holidays are looking to improve.

Before we get too ahead of ourselves though, there is a significant weather system which could throw a spanner in the works early in the week.

A strong cold front associated with a deep low pressure system over the Southern Ocean is due to cross the state on Monday and Tuesday, generating heavy rain and powerful winds.

The heaviest rain looks to fall on Monday, mostly confined over the Southern and Central Tablelands, ACT, South West Slopes and Central West Slopes and Plains. Totals of around 30-40mm are a chance, becoming lighter further west and north.

Areas of lighter rain and showers should spread east on Tuesday, impacting the North West Slopes and Tablelands, including an additional 10-20mm over southern NSW.

Wind and cold temperatures will likely be more significant factors on Tuesday however, with low level snow expected to fall down to around 600m. Perhaps a snow day is on the cards once the potential of damaging winds eases on Wednesday.

The later stages of the week will see a high pressure ridge build and span most of the state allowing for improving conditions. The sun is expected to come out leading to warmer, dryer days before heading back to school.
