September around the nation

Kim Westcott, Wednesday October 1, 2014 - 16:31 AEST

September was defined by record breaking heat in some cities and not much in the rain gauge nationwide.

September marks the 30th consecutive month that Sydney has seen above-average maximum temperatures. The nights were over a degree warmer and days nearly two degrees warmer. Sydney also suffered through 17 rain days this month, six days more than the average. However, despite the constant need for the umbrella, the showers didn't eventuate into above average rainfall for any suburb. Terrey Hills recorded 71mm this month which was close to average, where as Camden only saw 23mm, a little over half its September average.

In Melbourne September was a warm one, with both minimum and maximum temperatures two degrees above average. This will be the fourth consecutive September that Melbourne has experienced both above average minima and maxima. The warmer days and nights translated into lower than average rainfall across the city with five less rainfall days than average and more than 20mm less in terms of rainfall.

The nation's capital also saw daytime temperatures average almost two degrees above the norm, although nights were a little cooler than average. It was a dry month for the city with only 29mm falling, well short of the average of 52mm.

Adelaide experienced a touch of summer when the mercury only dipped to 21.6 degrees overnight on the weekend, making it the warmest September night in 27 years. Rainfall was below average, with Adelaide airport recording less than half the average rain. The city saw 31mm land in the rain gauge falling over 14 days, although still 28mm short of the average.

Perth recorded the second hottest September in more than a century, with maximum temperatures averaging 22 degrees for the month. This included the city's hottest September day on record, recording 34.2 degrees on the 20th. Frequent cold fronts brought a moderate amount of rain, with falls generally only 20 percent shy of the September average.

Hobart recorded its warmest September in 121 years of records, with daytime temperatures close to three degrees above average. The month was also very dry with only 19.4mm being recorded, the driest September since 1999.

Brisbane saw cooler than average temperatures and close to average rain, although the city did have two weeks this month where it did not even rain a drop.

Darwin was typified by having cool mornings under clear skies with the average minimum of 21 degrees the coolest for September in a decade. The city also finished its fourth consecutive month with no rain, capping off the driest dry season in 74 years of records, equal with 1976.
