Severe storms forming over NSW and Queensland

Ben Domensino, Thursday October 17, 2019 - 13:47 AEDT

Potentially severe thunderstorms are developing in parts of NSW and Queensland, with warnings in place for parts of both states.

A low pressure trough interacting with moisture-laden air is causing storms to develop over eastern Australia today.

At 1:30pm AEDT, thunderstorms were moving over the northern coast and ranges in NSW and the central and southern inland of Queensland, in a broad area between about Taree and Blackall. At this time, severe thunderstorm warnings were in place for damaging winds in both states, with large hail also a risk from the storms in Queensland.

Thunderstorms will spread towards the east during Thursday afternoon, likely causing the severe thunderstorm warnings to expand towards southeast Queensland.

Be sure to check the latest storm warnings if you are heading outside in central and southeast Queensland or northeast NSW today or tonight.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
