Severe storms hitting central Victoria

A band of potentially severe thunderstorms is moving across central Victoria from west to east this afternoon.


The line of storms, which has formed along a trough of low pressure, stretched from Geelong to Swan Hill at 3pm on Wednesday.

At the time, a severe thunderstorm warning was in place for damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain for parts of the Central, North Central, Mallee, South West, Northern Country and Wimmera Forecast Districts.


One intense storms hit Avalon Airport shortly after 3pm, causing a wind gust of 113km/h and delivering 44mm of rain in 30 minutes. As these storms continue to move towards the east, they are likely to affect the Melbourne metro area aduring the evening commute and dinner time.
