Severe storms strike southeast Queensland

Warnings have been issued for multiple thunderstorms in southeast Queensland this afternoon.

A line of intense thunderstorms developed over central and southeast Queensland on Monday afternoon as moisture-laden air from the Coral Sea fed into an unstable atmosphere, on the eastern side of a low pressure trough.

Brisbane received 19mm of rain in half an hour when one of the severe storms hit the city at 2pm. As the storm moved further east, winds were gusting to 85km/h on Moreton Bay at 3pm.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were still in place for parts of southeast Queensland at 3:30pm local time, with dangerous storms moving through the Moretaon Bay, Sunshine Coast and Gymipe Council Areas.

Thunderstorms are likely to abate later this afternoon and evening, but will return tomorrow.

Storms are likely to develop between Queensland South East Coast and Capricornia districts on Tuesday afternoon, roughly between Brisbane and Rockhampton. Some of these storms are likely to be severe.

Generation gone with the wind

13:20 AEST A weeklong stretch of low wind power was broken on Wednesday evening, as a weak cold front marched across southern Australia. The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
