Severe Thunderstorms pummel Brisbane

A severe thunderstorm to the north of Brisbane is bring exceptionally heavy rain and flash flooding.

Beerburrum, to the north of Brisbane recorded 24mm in just 10 minutes. Since 9am, the town has seen nearly 200 mmm with the gauge currently sitting at 196mm. This more than Tropical Cyclone Quang, a category 2 cyclone, has brought as it bears down on the west Pilbara coast of WA.

For Beerburrum and surrounding suburbs, much of the rain fell in a severe thunderstorm with 95mm recorded in one hour. The thunderstorm has developed within a broadscale system that is bringing heavy rain in a developing East Coast Low.

Thunderstorms are likely to continue to be risk this evening across the city and southeast QLD along with heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous surf conditions. Redcliffe has reported rain rates of 13mm in a 10 minute period and Brisbane city centre has seen as much as 42 mm in an hour.

Cape Morton has recorded gusts up to 101 km/h this afternoon with gale force gusts extending across the coasts from the Sunshine Coast to the NSW border.

Conditions are expected to ease during Saturday morning, but until then resisdents should keep up to date with the latest warnings and local media broadcasts.
