Severe thunderstorms set to strike Brisbane

Southern Queensland and northeast New South Wales are in the firing line for today's severe thunderstorms.

Yesterday, thunderstorms swept across eastern NSW and southern and central QLD, with many severe cells producing large hail and heavy rain. Overnight a couple of cells crept into western parts of Brisbane, but only brought a small taste of today's weather.

The trough has now edged a bit further eastward and has gained further moisture compared to yesterday. This means yesterday's dominant severe feature of large hail has been replaced by heavy rain, with many areas expected to see flash flooding.

This morning, the trough was producing patchy rain from central QLD to the NSW Mid North Coast. But this afternoon thunderstorms will spark up afresh and generally move to the east-southeast.

In the afternoon storms should remain inland in QLD, whilst they make their way to the coast in northern NSW. However in the evening thunderstorms are more likely to track all the way to the coast in southeastern QLD, bringing heavy falls and gusty winds.

Due to the primary risk of heavy rain, it is important for people to clean out their gutters and to avoid driving along flooded roads.
