Severe weather in southern Australia

Ben Domensino, Tuesday August 15, 2017 - 15:12 AEST

Flooding rain, thunderstorms and damaging winds will affect parts of southern Australia during the next 24 hours, with more rain to follow later this week.

A low pressure system and associated cold front moving through the Bight will produce inclement weather in parts of five states and territories today and on Wednesday.

Flood Watches have been issued for South Australia's Mount Lofty Ranges and Victoria's North East district, where falls may be heavy enough to produce minor flooding by tomorrow.

Warm temperatures and rainfall in the alps are likely to produce snowmelt with this system, which will enhance inflows into rivers and may increase the risk of flooding. Rain will turn to snow later on Wednesday as cold air reaches the alps in the wake of the front.

In addition to the rain, damaging winds are possible near the front and with showers or thunderstorms in its wake. Gusts may reach 90km/h in parts of SA, Vic, NSW and the ACT during the next 24 hours and may exceed 110km/h in the alps, bringing a risk of blizzards.

This system is going to cause dangerous weather during nighttime hours, so be sure to stay up to date with the latest warnings and contact the SES on 132 500 if you need assistance.

Another front will bring a renewed burst of wind, showers and storms to southern Australia on Wednesday and Thursday. The rain from this system will be falling into already saturated catchments, so there will be a heightened risk of flooding.
