Severe weather in WA on Friday

Ben Domensino, Friday May 29, 2020 - 10:46 AEST

A severe weather warning has been issued in southwestern parts of Western Australia today, including Perth.

A cold front will bring a burst of wind, rain and thunderstorms to the state's South West Land Division during Friday.

This front won't be as strong as the system that impacted the state last Sunday and Monday, although it will still bring severe weather.

Damaging winds with gusts of up to 100km/h are possible to the southwest of a line from about Perth to Bremer Bay during Friday. The strongest winds early in the morning were occurring along the exposed South West Capes, where Cape Leeuwin registered a wind gust of 89km/h shortly before 7am. Dangerous winds will spread further north and east later in the day, with areas in and around Perth at risk of damaging winds from about midday, particularly near the coast and exposed hills.

In addition to the wind, a period of heavy rain and squally thunderstorms will also accompany the front as it passes over the state's southwest on Friday. Some places could see 30-50mm of rain, which is enough to cause flash flooding. The heaviest falls around Perth are likely to occur in the hills.

Coastal areas between Mandurah and Albany could also see flooding in low-lying areas on Friday as onshore winds bring big waves and higher than normal tides. These waves may also cause beach erosion along the exposed South West Capes for the second time this week.

By Friday evening, cold air will start spreading over southwestern and southern districts of the state. This frigid air will cause further showers and small hail in some areas on Friday night, followed by a chilly day on Saturday.

Be sure to check the latest warnings for the most up-to-date information during this event.
